Capture multiple scans

It’s usually impossible to capture a full 360deg scan, so multiple scans are taken from various angles around the object.

Individual scans are not initially related or aligned to each other.

Align individual scans to each other

Align individual scans to each other

This step aligns each scan by manually “joining the dots” between common points on different scans. The scanning software then uses complex algorithms to exactly align different scans with each other.

Once the individual scans are aligned, the model begins to take shape and you can identify any areas that have been missed and require more scan data to be captured.

Individual scans "fused" into a single body

Once all the scans are aligned, they are then combined into a single body. The scanning software uses a process called “fusion” where algorithms are used to remove outlying data points and then generate a single body from the remaining scan data.

Map textures onto scan

Map textures onto scan

During the scan capture process, some frames have colour captured as well as geometry, much like a colour photo being taken. This colour data can then be mapped onto the final scan model to create a realistic looking surface texture.
